Due to his busy 1/8th commitments last year, Mark could only manage to race two 200mm BRCA Nationals with his S720-08. He says this year he will attempt to race all the BRCA Nationals and internationals ones including the Florida WinterNats as well as the Worlds. The last couple of days Mark has been re-familiarising himself with the S720-08 at AMCC and he has kindly sent me some tips to share with all Serpent racers for the upcoming Round 1 of the BRCA Nationals.
I saw the car at speed on the track and I have to say how easy, smooth, fast and stable the car looked despite the bumps on the sweeper! I am still kicking myself for not having my video camera handy to shoot the session (as always, I hate to SAY all these things without actually having a video to SHOW how it really is - ah well, next time perhaps).
To QUOTE Mark, "Here are the tips and mods I do, you don't have to have an 08 kit, you can buy the bits to copy the set up."
Tips
Use Ball Joints Set 16+6+2 (#903231), these are a much better fit than the kit ones. I also use the Xceed LiPo set. (Xceed Regular 6.2V For Lipo RX Pack XCE-105002 and Xceed Lipo Receiver Pack 1100Mah 7.4V For 720 XCE-105000)
Parts
* Steering Blocks Evo2 720 - 0 offset (#803211)
* Fill plate LCG chassis brass (#803207) - if you dont have a LCG chassis just put 25-30 grams lead on front bumper.
* Ventilated brake disc 1/10th (#803213)
* Race brakepad-set L + R (type A) (#9607)
More Tips
For the dampers I use the standard dampers but on the rear I use a longer shaft - Shock Rods long Ti-Ni (2) (#903227). This lets me get 5 or 4 rear droop. Then I drill out all the pistons to 1.2mm, you will only need to do this on 2 and 3 hole pistons. If you use 2 holes use 30 Serpent oil or if 3 holes use 35 Serpent oil.
Next springs: I have been testing and found that the new springs are better. Also I use front springs on the rear. To do this you will need the Spring Cup Nylon ISL (4) (#903240). These have +2mm raised. Get 2 sets of Spring set L23 (5) (#160310) and then use Orange on rear and Blue on front.
I have also made my car 2mm short wheel based. 1mm at front and 1mm at rear, some people will not like this so leave this mod until last! If you do try just use 1mm castor clips to do the mod. Remember to put a 1mm spacer inbetween the front roll bar and the wishbones.
I also have drilled out the front droop screw holes to use bigger screws. This stops the small ones from putting dents on the droop/roll bar arm so the droop stays the same after any crashes.
I have thined out the front roll bar blades, I thin it so that they are only 2.5mm wide to make them softer. (Another alternative is to get the Anti-Roll bar blade FR soft set #803204)
I also use the Servo Saver Spring Hard (#803203) but I have to admit that at very high grip tracks I put a washer to make it even harder.
Shocks: you must replace the foam, I do this for all big races. I also pop the damper off at the bottom and pull the damper to full stroke (long/out). This will make the foam last longer. To fill use the RCC shock absorber tool (#903202), this makes things very easy and you can tell when the foam is going because when you fill and use the tool, if the foam is gone you will not be able to fully compress the damper (like its over filled). With new foam you will be able to push the shaft all the way in.
Mark also adds: "I will try and give you the set up before each meeting/race, but one of the problems is that I only went to 2 tracks last year. If I go testing to any of them I will do (send the setups). If I don't have a track set up I will say which set up I will start with. Also I will make a set up sheet each Saturday for the meeting so people can copy on the day.
Mark.
